ROLAND THOMPSON •
blip
artist reception: Friday, July 17, 6-9
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION
blip (noun) “a crisp, interruptive sound.”
A Gallery/Allen+Alan Fine Art is pleased to offer a spark of inspiration with Roland Thompson's blip. His custom cut three-dimensional wall art toys with the senses using a pop art sensibility. Combining the vibrant colors of flashing arcades and online gaming, the pieces stimulate us with new patterns and fresh connections. Thompson's work exists at the intersection of painting and sculpture. Shape, line and color operate in tandem to form illusions and create interruptions in space. Play becomes the discipline through an emphasis on rhythmic lines, joyous color and a minimalist intent. Through carefully planned forms and varied painterly techniques, objectivity is animated with visual simulations of movement and sound.
Roland Thompson is an instructor of art at Utah Valley and Brigham Young Universities. After receiving a BFA in Studio Art from BYU and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Thompson's work took on new dimensions during post-graduate studies in Paris. He has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Mahan Gallery in Ohio, MARTa Herford in Germany, Martos Gallery in California, ParisCONCRET in France, and White Columns in New York. His work is included in the permanent collections of Brigham Young University, the City of Mesa, Arizona, the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
